He was walking sorta funny and was pushing himself against the brick wall. I brushed that off as him trying to get his Doggles off as sometimes he doesn't love them. He was actually throwing his his and rear end against the wall first. Later when he stood up his whole rear end area was funny looking and he was bending his knees weird. So I decided we should leave especially with the heat. I was hoping the next day he would be all better....unfortunately that was not the case. I made an appointment with the vet and they were going to do some x-rays and check him out. I called a few folks and was hoping this was not Wobbler's as he's at the right age for this to show up. The vet called me a little while after I dropped him up and said she didn't feel comfortable sedating him and doing x-rays there because *if* it were Wobbler's than that could actually cause more harm and thought an MRI would be better. She referred us to Dr. Gallagher in Cary at VSRP. The following Tuesday we were in Cary bright and early. The staff was very nice and loved Sawyer! Dr. Gallagher came out along with his intern and we went outside so they could watch him walk and move. He then wanted to examine Sawyer, being the spaz that he is Sawyer wasn't too fond of that. After going over all the options we decided they would do x-rays as it did appear to him that Sawyer did have some degree of Wobbler's. Less than 30 minutes later we were looking at the x-rays....good news is that he has excellent hip confirmation! Bad news is that he has a few "bad" spots in his neck. His C3 and C4 vertebrae were fused, he had tipping on his C5 and the spacing between the C7 was a triangle shape instead of the normal rectangle. The diagnosis: Cervical Vertebral Instability aka Wobbler's.
I did learn something interesting with Wobbler's, apparently the term is used loosely and to describe a few different spinal cord diseases.

Surgery is way too risky and it seemed to have many more cons than pros, so that was quickly dismissed. I don't feel the gold bead implants would be the best as I've heard about them either helping for a little while or not doing anything. He probably wouldn't make the best candidate for acupuncture as he's so funny about anything being on him other than a collar! So for now we just watch him and if he starts getting worse with walking then we will start him on a low dose of steroids. We also will have to make sure and assist him walking down steps as a bad fall could do damage. Sawyer is a good boy and we'll do all we can to make sure he's happy and comfortable.
brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-55729730682600389182011-07-03T20:50:00.002-04:002011-07-03T20:58:25.945-04:00Update
Sawyer the stud is still doing well adjusting to his Doggles. We attended the Washington Summer Festival in June and he did wonderful. Kept his shades on the whole time! Everyone loves a big white dog sporting sunglasses! As usual he helped draw a crowd over...especially when he finally crashed...in the chair! Not sure how much longer he'll fit though! His vision hasn't changed too much lately, but I have noticed him rubbing his face on the couch, hoping its just allergies.brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-67647815058525075202011-05-29T15:00:00.002-04:002011-05-29T15:19:04.067-04:00

Sawyer is one lucky boy! With his eyesight deteriorating, I contacted Doggles a company out of California and they were awesome and donated a pair of Doggles to not only Sawyer, but also Stella!!! Stella is another deaf and vision-impaired Great Dane in foster care with MAGDRL. When they came in the mail and I put them on him for the first time, he wouldn't open his eyes and he kept trying to back up. After giving him lots of treats and thumbs up signals, he opened his eyes and just shook his head. Sawyer attended the Fossil Festival and he did a great job keeping them on! Everyone wanted to come pet the dog with the glasses on. You would think he was some rare animal....(unless you read Craigslist where the "Rare White Great Dane" is offered for sale). At one point, 4 different people stopped at the same time to take his picture from across the ditch where our booth was! Haha, was pretty funny! Overall, I think they really helped him; when we got home, he was not squinting at all and his eyes didn't seem to bother him as they usually do after being out all day! So YAY!!!! HUGE thanks to Doggles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-21480881935207921432011-04-09T21:20:00.002-04:002011-04-09T21:26:35.570-04:00good newsAfter feeding our trial box of The Honest Kitchen's Zeal for only 4 days....yep that's right. With 5 large/giant dogs it only lasted for 4 days. :-( Anyhow, Sawyer began licking his back foot and it turned red, my first thought was that he possibly had an allergy to an ingredient in the food but he still has a red foot and his other paw has also turned red. So the good news is that I don't think it is a food allergy...but the not so good news is who knows what is going on with his feet. They LOVE The Honest Kitchen so we are VERY glad they can continue to have it as a special meal sometimes! When I win the lottery, we will switch to it full time! :-) Sandy, Titan, Roxy, Piper and Sawyer highly recommend this food for other 4-legged creatures!brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-61506251453509528642011-04-02T19:02:00.000-04:002011-04-02T19:03:14.322-04:00TestingCheck me out on Facebook!! :-)brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-12231234946536074052011-03-26T21:06:00.003-04:002011-03-26T21:31:53.526-04:00We love ZEAL!!!

We recently got a sample box of The Honest Kitchen's newest flavor, Zeal. I am not sure who was more excited when the box finally arrived, me or the dogs! We got it this past Wednesday and I have been giving it to everyone for dinner, they still get dry food for breakfast....this works out pretty good since I am usually running behind in the mornings. The Zeal formula's top ingredient is dehydrated white fish and let me tell you...once you open the box, you can surely smell the fish! Let's just say with Sawyer's nose, that boy was trying to get to the box before I had opened it. The good news is that they all love it and their stools have been great! The only not so good thing is that for a multi-dog household, to feed it twice a day would probably be a little expensive. I have 5 dogs weighing -- 115lbs, 100lbs, 96lbs, 60lbs and 50lbs. Total dry cups for each feeding are around 7-8 cups. So we have already used half the box up and it's not been a week. :-( Other than that, if cost wasn't an issue, we would totally switch over to THK's food for all meals.

For those unfamiliar with The Honest Kitchen, they have dehydrated whole foods for pets. You pretty much just add water and let it soak for 5-10 minutes. At my house, 10 minutes is a lifetime...I have to make one bowl at a time and then place them all in a crate so the dogs can't get to it while I am timing it. They then take turns guarding it and growling at each other and Sawyer usually ends up opening the bottom latch, but luckily by then it is time to separate and feed.

Another thing I can't really say for sure is that Sawyer may *possibly* be allergic to one of the ingredients. I noticed Thursday night one of his paws was super red on the bottom between his toes and it was also pink on top of his toes. However, this was after he had eaten the food twice...but as of today his foot is still hot pink. He's had THK's Force flavor before and had no problems, so it very well could be just one thing in the Zeal.

Overall, we give it a great review. The dogs start whining when they see me grab the box down and get the scoops ready to fill bowls. I also like how there are bigger "chunks" of veggies and fish in it! Well I am assuming the white chunks are fish...

Check out their website to find out more: http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/

brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-67914840637885940532011-03-19T12:45:00.002-04:002011-03-19T12:57:46.454-04:00Prayers for Sawyer

Sawyer had a great day at the 20th Annual St. Patrick's Day Festival in Emerald Isle. We raised money for the Danes and met lots of new friends and possible adopters! After getting up at 4:00am and driving to EI, we had quite a long day....got home around 7:15pm. Both Sawyer and I were exhausted. He could barely hold his head up and couldn't keep his eyes open. On Sunday we got up at usual and I noticed Sawyer was still holding one of his eyes closed. When he finally let me near, I was able to see blood so what does any mom do, F-R-E-A-K of course. Long story short, I called our trusty vet, Dr. Whit first thing Monday morning and he was able to call and get us in to see Dr. English, the specialist in Cary. Luckily they were able to fit us in on Wednesday. (Very nice place and friendly staff if you ever have to go, Animal Eye Care.)

Turns out Saywer has "cysts in his ciliary body and peripheral retina in both eyes, and mild retinal dysplasia or folds." This explains the squinting on Sunday, the cyst in his left eye was expanding. Unfortunately this means *IF* the cyst continues to expand, it can lead to retinal detachment and loss of vision. I was very concerned but also glad to hear that his other eye is in better shape. Dr. English gave him a 50% chance of losing vision in the left eye and the other eye should be fine. This was better news than I expected but for now we will take it day-by-day and continue monitoring both his eyes for changes.

brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-83692231729453373252011-03-10T20:19:00.003-05:002011-03-10T20:27:54.581-05:00St Patrick's Day Festival

Sawyer will be attending the 20th Annual St. Patrick's Day Festival with me in Emerald Isle this Saturday. Roxy, she will still poop sometimes at night if she doesn't go before bed..and she's almost 4! She is one of those dogs who likes to smell every blade of grass before going and it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R! I don't have time for that. Piper, who is now 14 months still has some fascination with peeing on my bed. WTH?? She will pace around for only 5 seconds before she pees so I really have to watch her and she trails it really bad. Sawyer is almost 11 months and has had UTI's with blood and almost crystals so I feel its ok that potty training has taken longer with him...however, it is still not fun trying to get him to pee outside. He peed 3 times inside last night and again this morning when the door was W-I-D-E open!!!! And I even pointed outside...what am I doing wrong??? Obviously something. It's a good thing I don't have children!brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-15190062388787136582011-02-18T21:30:00.000-05:002011-02-18T22:13:20.256-05:00Piper's story...

It was February 2010 and a very special foster had just been adopted two weeks prior, Kincade aka "Kadie" and my heart was aching....I got a phone call from Terri about a puppy that was being kept in a crate in someone's garage and they were going to surrender the puppy to us and a foster home was needed. Having a house full of dogs already, I generally stick to fostering puppies since Roxy and Molly were funny around larger dogs but something really grabbed me about this one. (Ginger will tell you that *any* dog would grab me!) I decided to go for it and was headed to Fayetteville to help introduce a new foster to a Dane that another family was surrendering. He was a gorgeous harlequin Dane that was the most emaciated dog I think I have ever seen and he smelled awful. Luckily he was cleaned up and later adopted. Kelli and Andrew pulled up and I saw this tiny little puppy with the goofiest ears. Kelli immediately handed her over and said, "she's all yours!" Piper quickly got the nickname, "Pisser" as she had already peed in Kelli's lap and I think she peed on me too! Piper had been living with a school teacher of all people and had been banished to the garage away from everyone and everything and was kept in a crate. She was only about 15lbs and around 7-8 weeks old and very very smelly. We let her wander around(on a leash of course) for a few minutes before I headed home. She peed a few more times in the car and was doing everything she could to try and jump in the front seat with me. Everytime she climbed over, I promptly put her back until she finally gave up.

We got home and she peed again. LOL Once we got inside and she met everyone, I but her right in the bathtub as she had poop under all her nails and I wasn't sure if she was ever allowed to go potty outside of her crate. As she was running around I noticed her front legs were growing at a curved angle, luckily I think we got her in time and now they are completely straight. I quickly learned Piper was going to be more of a work in progress and might be around for a few weeks. As I showed Piper the water bowls, she drank like she never had water before in her life. I proceeded to reach my hand and pet her while she was drinking....I saw a new side of her, viscious Piper! She growled and turned her head so quick and I knew she was going to need a bit of work. Same thing happened when it was time to feed her. I placed a small amount of food in a bowl and just got close with no contact and she was growling, the closer I got the more tense and angry she got. I hand fed her every piece of food for a while and she is no longer food aggressive with me. I also made it a point to praise her and rub her when she drinks water as well. To this day she has no problems with me but is still very food and water aggressive with other dogs. Piper is now 13 months old and maybe weighs around 100lbs, a very petite Dane. I took her to quite a few events to try and get her socialized, although today she doesn't attend events because she still has behavior problems. As time went by, I realized how different Piper was and honestly was nervous to let her go as I knew all her weird quirks and wasn't sure how she would do with someone else. By the time July rolled around I had pretty much decided she was home to stay and her adoption became official! Piper is the first Great Dane I have owned and I don't regret it one bit, she has taught me a lot and as all my other dogs, she holds a special place in my heart. I had always said I would never own a hearing Dane, I wanted a deaf Dane but I am pretty sure we don't get to choose, they choose us....

brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-83319045942994825862011-02-11T16:44:00.000-05:002011-02-11T16:55:16.974-05:00Handsome boy Sawyer

Playing with big sister Piper

This was the first day I got him!

brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-57634392739142994982011-02-11T16:37:00.000-05:002011-02-11T16:44:20.333-05:00A new year....new leash on life....I think its about time I update my blog....lots have dogs, both Danes and other breeds have passed through my life and been adopted. My newest foster is a deaf and vision impaired Dane named Sawyer. He's currently around 104lbs and 9 1/2 months old. He is a foster through MAGDRL. He came from Pender County in NC. Someone dumped him in the woods and animal control picked him up and called MAGDRL. That was on July 22, he came to my house on July 23 and has been a member of my pack ever since. Sawyer is still looking for a forever home. He is such a sweet boy, although he does have some behavior issues. He likes to resource guard me as well as toys. He loves big sister Piper....she will have to be another post.....she is my official first Great Dane, also known as a "foster failure" through MAGDRL. She is 13 months old and quite a handful still! She and Sawyer love to play and get in trouble together. Back to Sawyer, he's a very special boy, I am currently working on sign language with him and also touch to learn his basic obedience. Hopefully when the weather gets nice here we will be able to begin agility, I think he will enjoy it!!
Pictures to follow...brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-19996444540984884512009-07-02T07:51:00.000-04:002009-07-02T07:52:28.046-04:00New PuppiesI'm sad because we are getting in 2 blind puppies....but I won't be able to foster them. :-(brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-42555779125197633152009-06-25T10:41:00.000-04:002009-06-25T11:07:53.144-04:00No new fosters.......since I'm slack and haven't been updating this.....as of today I have no new fosters. In March I fostered 3 deaf/visually impaired brothers! Dylan, the first brother (and the largest) got adopted first and went up to PA....way too far! I hear from his new family pretty frequently and he has other Dane brothers and also a German Shepherd puppy his age to grow up with. Einstein, the next one got adopted a little while later and stayed right here in NC! I get to see him sometimes at some of our Meet and Greets. He also has another Dane brother and some other fur brothers and sisters. Woohoo!!! And last but not least, Rory has been adopted and now lives in NJ. He has a Dane brother and Dane sister to play with. These puppies were all very special to me and it was so much fun to foster them. It was really hard to part with these sweet boys but I know they are all doing great and will have awesome lives! Titan was probably pretty happy when they all got adopted so he could have all my attention back though! We are back in action going to Meet and Greets and my big boy is as happy as can be!brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-44589748622844089562009-03-03T16:42:00.000-05:002009-03-03T16:46:10.343-05:00Raleigh and Chance...againSomeone isn't keeping quite the foster log she planned so I've decided to update it for her so she can keep her journal of fosters going...

Raleigh went to his new home last month - the home of another foster family in the MAGDRL program. They'd been looking for a blue dane and fell in love with Raleigh.

Chance has been accepted into a lab rescue in Virginia. He'll be transported to northern NC on Friday and will then have one more day of transport until he reaches his final destination near DC.

Molly (the pit bull) has been listed on Petfinder and will remain as a "foster" until she can be placed.

And finally...once Titan and Roxy settle from the recent chaos, I'm sure another dane will come along and there will be more excitement from the crazy farm! :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-20112453911978990292009-02-08T16:44:00.000-05:002009-02-09T19:04:27.251-05:00Meet ChanceChance is a black lab/hound mix that was found at a worksite in G'boro a couple weeks ago. He unfortunately didn't have a microchip so... a keeper he became! Don't let him fool you, while he enjoys hanging out with his foster brothers and sisters, he's really hopeful for his own forever home. Chance loves his people and wants to be with them constantly. If he can't see you, he'll let you know he's looking for you!

Chance had a minor soft tissue injury on his rear leg but this will heal and he'll be good as new. He's also heartworm positive. He'll be on Heartgard for three months then his blood will be rechecked. It may be that this will rid his body of the worms or it may take a more aggressive injection therapy. We'll know more in two more months.

Chance is ~12 months old and full of puppy energy. I'm sure more photos will follow! He's too handsome not to share!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300545951098444642" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; He was born with glaucoma so severe that his right eye had to be removed. He also had a procedure due to a herniated umbilical. Raleigh had a second procedure on his eye not even a week after the first. It looks much better now and he is full of spunk and energy! Raleigh will be adopted when he is 12-weeks old by someone in North Carolina. Til then he's enjoying playing with his foster brothers and sisters!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-35692447214621677522009-01-27T15:16:00.000-05:002009-01-27T15:23:16.246-05:00New additionWell I just found out Sunday I will be fostering a tiny puppy! WooHoo! He is a 7 week old Dane, not sure what color yet. Me and my sidekick Terri will be picking him up this Friday night in Raleigh. Long story short.....a breeder brought him to the vet to have his eye looked at and he also had a hernia; the eye ended up having glaucoma very bad, they are having to remove his eye. The hernia is also large. A very nice vet tech would not let the lady take him home to euthanize and instead contacted us! The vet will be doing surgery to correct both ailments on Thursday and as long as everything goes well he will coming to Goldsboro this weekend for LOTS of love for a while until he finds his furever home!
I did find out today at lunch time that he only weighs about 9lbs!!! Very tiny....half the size of Duke the cat!brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4882650786046080032.post-20693150294177993732009-01-16T09:27:00.001-05:002009-01-16T10:21:37.780-05:00Welcome to my blog....not sure if anyone will read this except my brown-haired twin. I will not promise a funny story every day but hopefully a couple. I will start with Titan, my big brindle boy. He came from the Humane Society at about 9-10wks old, already neutered....not sure how i feel about the whole early spay/neuter thing. Probably a good thing for the idiots who don't ever get their pets sterilized. That will be another day's post....spay/neuter. Anyhow, Titan grew into a 100lb gorgeous momma's boy! He is a Great Dane/Plott Hound mix. He is a very smart dog that is obedient about 90% of the time, the other 10% he is off in the field eating fish and whatever else he can find that will make him stink and empty his stomach contents. His counterpart Roxy, is usually right there by his side. She is a Chow mix....with who know's what else! We still have yet to figure it out. My brother found her in a parking lot limping around and somehow she became part of our pack. She is Titan's small fluffy twin....she is also brindle, but a red brindle. She gets her attitude from her Chow ancestors. These two can always be found causing trouble together!
Now to the main reason for this blog....I have always enjoyed helping "save the dogs" and will continue to do so as long as possible. Me and Titan have started volunteering/fostering with the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League. They have such an awesome rescue to work with and I hope to one day adopt a Great Dane from them.
The first boy we helped was Boris, we assisted with a transport and a one night sleepover with him. What a gorgeous black Dane he was; he didn't last long as he was such a young boy(16mos) and a very nice family adopted him.
My first true foster was Sadie. I had her about 4 weeks. What an awesome experience. She has been adopted by a wonderful family in SC. She is a 6-7mo deaf merlequin full of spunk!! Sadie was a very intelligent girl and wanted nothing but a warm lap to sit in! The house is quiet without her as Titan loved romping around the house playing with her....and even Roxy enjoyed having her around, that is very rare for my Roxy girl! I really enjoyed having her and miss her TONS!
I can't wait to get another foster......brittanydailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16061173374328617077noreply@blogger.com1
